A music instrument store near me has decided to refocus, meaning they will move away from selling instruments, to a piano repair and rent company. This means they are selling all their stock, at discounts of up to 70%. While this sounds very tempting, I wasn’t really in the market for a new guitar, although I was toying with the idea of getting an acoustic guitar, but had kinda decided that would not be needed now. So what should I do Oppo? Buy (a) guitar(s) now with the benefits of the extra discounts, or just let this opportunity pass by?

Also any recommendations on which kind of guitar I should get? I play a very wide spectrum of music, so I guess a guitar which is widely usable would be nice. My current and only guitar is a Cort G-series Stratocaster.

Yeah, I was actually contemplating some mild version of that too. If only eBay was used in the Netherlands and not its shitty Marktplaats subsidiary. If I were to sell them through there I would probably get less than what I pay for them with discount, since all people on there are cheepo idiots.

Can you resell the guitar later for more than you paid for it? Can you afford to invest some money in that? If so, do it so even if you don’t use them you can get your value back out of it.

I have nothing else to add other than that would be one badass Death Race 2000 car.

Depending on quality level, 70% discount is a slam dunk. The guitars still made in the US hold their value. If you can afford to, do it. You can always sell it later for more than you paid if you change your mind. Just make sure their discount is actually not off of an inflated price no one else sells the equivalent guitar for.

Does this store have a website? I wasn’t looking for a new guitar either, but 70% off!!

Nope, it’s just an old fashioned brick and mortar store in the Netherlands. Which is probably the reason they decided to stop with sales, since everything, literally everything, here is sold on the internet at the moment(of which I’m to blame too, working at a webshop, selling bathrooms).

Guitars depreciate quickly at first, but then hold their value forever. A used 2015 guitar will cost the same as one from 1980. The only exception would be collector guitars, or rare/weird vintage stuff. If you can buy a new guitar for the same price they’re going for on eBay/Craigslist, you’ve got nothing to lose if you buy one and don’t end up keeping it.

If you’re looking for something with resale value, for a few years down the line or if you don’t stick with it, stay with brand name stuff that people look for - Fenders, Gibsons, Martins, Taylors. They’ll be easier to resell.

That said, if you’re just looking to score on a nice guitar for yourself, those brand names carry a bit of a tax to them that usually isn’t quite worth it (Gibsons and Martins especially, in my mind).
